The Jeep Grand Cherokee is a good option in the mid-size SUV class, offering impressive off-road performance, muscular styling, and an upscale and spacious cabin. Additionally, the Jeep Grand Cherokee offers a remarkable degree of customizability with two body styles, a hybrid variant, and a plethora of trim levels with varying levels of luxury. However, the Grand Cherokee remains a Jeep, lacking the reliability and refinement that some rivals provide. While the Jeep loses some appeal for long term owners, its warranty coverage remains appropriate for most lease terms and lines up with what most rivals offer. For 2025, Jeep has opted to carryover the Grand Cherokee from the previous model year with a few minor changes. Jeep has reduced the price of all gas-powered models, with a more significant reduction on the higher trim levels. However, the hybrid “4Xe” models receive no such reduction in pricing.
The Jeep Grand Cherokee offers an attractive and rugged exterior design, utilizing muscular styling and a square-faced front end design. While some rivals offer a more luxury-focused design, the Grand Cherokee’s exterior design is handsome and offers a good degree of curb appeal. The interior design is attractive and modern, marking a huge improvement over the previous generation. Additionally, the Grand Cherokee sits underneath the flagship Wagoneer SUV in the Jeep lineup, offering a remarkably premium cabin, especially on the higher trim levels. While the entry-level models are sparsely equipped with premium materials, the higher trim levels utilize more luxury materials such as genuine wood trim and Nappa leather upholstery. However, the most premium materials are reserved for the top-of-the-line Summit Reserve models. Additionally, Jeep’s Uconnect 5 infotainment system is proving to be one of the best currently available, offering crisp graphics and a good degree of functionality. The Grand Cherokee also comes equipped with several standard features for safety and convenience. The Grand Cherokee is also offered in a three-row version, the Grand Cherokee L which provides a third row of seating. The Grand Cherokee L is better suited for paved roads but has been engineered with off-road capabilities befitting the Jeep badge.
The Grand Cherokee has fairly nimble handling, rides comfortably, and is one of the best off-road SUVs in its class. While the Grand Cherokee makes notable investments in ride comfort, it remains fairly obvious that the Jeep is tuned for off-roading with more jostling than rivals, especially on lower trim levels. However, the Grand Cherokee is far from punishing, absorbing shocks and bumps without feeling overly stiff or harsh. Additionally, the Grand Cherokee maintains a good degree of composure and stability through turns and winding roads. The higher trims offer enhanced ride comfort through Semi-Active Damping and a Quadra-Lift® Air Suspension, offering increased vehicle stability and ride comfort. However, the suspension upgrades are only available starting with the Overland trim level. While Jeep also offers several package options for appearance and driver assistance technology for the lower trim levels, suspension upgrades are reserved for the higher trim levels.
The Grand Cherokee is powered by a 3.6-liter V6 as the only gas powertrain option available. The V6 produces 293 horsepower and 257 pound-feet of torque, with a towing capacity of 6,200 pounds. The V6 is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and rear-wheel drive as the standard arrangement. However, an all-wheel drive system is available on most trim levels and standard on the higher trim levels. While the V6 doesn’t offer particularly inspiring performance, it’s sufficiently powerful for most driving maneuvers and adequately motivates the SUV. The two-row gas-powered grand Cherokee manages to make the sprint from 0-60 mph in 7.4 seconds, whereas the larger three-row Grand Cherokee L takes a full 8.0 seconds. For drivers who want more power, the two-row plug-in-hybrid 4Xe offers a significant improvement in performance, pairing a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that is paired with two electric motors. The hybrid arrangement is paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive as the sole arrangement. The combined efforts of the turbocharged four-cylinder and two electric motors produce 375 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque. The combined efforts reduce the 0-60 mph time to 5.3 seconds, over a quarter of a second quicker than the now discontinued V8.
