The Acura MDX is a good option in the mid-size luxury SUV class, providing attractive styling, capable handling, and good value. However, while the Acura delivers an enjoyable driving experience, it lacks the refinement and power to compete with more expensive rivals. The Acura stands out as a good value option for a luxury-level mid-size SUV, providing a good degree of refinement for the price point. Additionally, the sportier Type S Advance trim level is paired with a more powerful engine and additional performance equipment, starting much lower than the performance models of rivals. However, the MDX isn’t as inspiring as some rivals, with the entry-level BMW X5 model offering quicker acceleration than the most powerful MDX model. For 2025, Acura has given the MDX a mild update, with new styling among other changes. Most notably, the trackpad infotainment interface has been replaced with a 12.3-inch touchscreen display and the center console has been reworked. The interior also benefits from new front seats that are now offered with an option for a massage function. The exterior design receives a less thorough update, with slight changes to the front design. Acura has also made several changes in options and features to provide a more compelling option in the class.
The Acura MDX offers an attractive design, offering a good degree of curb appeal. However, the interior of the Acura leaves much to be desired when compared to rivals. The cabin of the MDX offers a premium look and feel, especially on high-end trims. The Acura’s interior layout, while an improvement over the previous model year, isn’t quite as attractive as some rivals. However, the Acura offers a higher degree of practicality, maintaining a good amount of physical controls for convenience with a relatively straightforward layout. The Acura does a good job of offering an upscale experience, distinguishing itself from the Honda Pilot, with which it shares its bones. The MDX makes good use of premium material selections to provide an attractive cabin while remaining at a reasonable price point.
The Acura MDX offers a pleasant driving experience, with a good balance between sport and comfort. The SUV offers accurate steering and precise handling, allowing the SUV to handle corners surprisingly well. The MDX also offers a comfortable ride, with its suspension handling most bumps on the road. The MDX Type S Advance trim level offers a more comfortable and controlled ride, through an air suspension setup that offers stiffer struts and adaptive dampers. The MDX also offers comfortable and supportive front seats that are highly adjustable, making them one of the best offered in the class. The MDX offers front-wheel-drive on only the lowest two trims (The MDX & Technology), with Acura’s super-handling all-wheel-drive standard on all other trims. The Acura does a good job of providing engagement at its price point, falling short of rivals but not trailing too far behind. However, the Acura comes out ahead on reliability, which is especially true of its Honda-sourced engines.
The Acura MDX offers two engine options: the base 3.5-liter V6 engine and a 3.0-liter turbocharged V6 reserved for the Type S Advance trim level. The base 3.5-liter V6 produces 290 horsepower and provides sufficient power for nearly all driving situations. The V6 is paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission which directs power to the front or all wheels, depending on the trim level and configuration selected. Upgrading to the Type S trims unlocks the 355 horsepower 3.0-liter turbocharged V6 and sportier tuning, delivering additional power and better acceleration culminating in a livelier driving experience. The turbocharged V6 provides a more compelling argument in the class, providing an extensive suite of standard features. Additionally, most rivals charge a significant markup for similar features, reserving several desirable features for expensive package options. The turbocharged engine complements the standard all-wheel-drive system and helps the MDX feel more agile around turns. However, the Type S isn’t particularly quick for the class, standing out more for its engaging handling dynamics.
