The Honda Odyssey is an excellent option in the dwindling minivan class, providing solid value, a practical interior, and impressive handling dynamics. However, the Odyssey loses some appeal compared to rivals, with no all-wheel-drive system available and lower fuel efficiency ratings than hybrid rivals. While Honda didn’t invent the minivan, they’ve nearly perfected the formula as the Odyssey enters its third decade of production. For 2025, Honda has given the fifth generation Odyssey its second refresh, updating the exterior styling, technology features, and the trim levels offered. The exterior design doesn’t see any major changes, but an updated front design provides a more sporty appearance. While the interior doesn’t receive any design changes, it benefits from updated technology features. The Honda Odyssey reduces the trim levels to four, with the discontinuation of the EX trim level. Additionally, the Sport trim level has been renamed the Sport-L. The Odyssey maintains its compelling argument of a plethora of modern safety tech features and a highly configurable interior.
The exterior design of the Honda Odyssey isn’t particularly noteworthy, with most rivals offering a similar design. However, the updated design offers a sportier appearance than the outgoing model, offering some appeal in comparison. The updated front end utilizes a sportier grill design, lending to a more upright and muscular appearance. The interior of the Odyssey remains as exceptional and functional as ever, with an open interior and the remarkable level of configurability offered by Honda’s Magic Slide seating system. The interior of the Odyssey receives some meaningful updates in technology, with a new 7-inch digital gauge cluster and a new 8-inch touch screen infotainment display. The infotainment system also receives a faster processor, wireless Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™ compatibility. Additionally, the rear entertainment system on the Touring and Elite trim levels has been updated with a larger high-resolution screen and a relocated HDMI port. While the Blu-Ray/DVD Player has been discontinued, Honda offers a dedicated storage compartment for streaming devices. Other technology updates include a wireless phone charger and additional USB-C ports throughout the cabin.
The Honda Odyssey’s performance has been a positive attribute for a long time and that’s yet to change. The Odyssey’s handling dynamics are surprisingly athletic for a minivan and maintains a good degree of composure. Additionally, the steering response is precise, albeit a bit light, and the braking system maintains a good degree of stability. However, despite the sportier capabilities, the Odyssey remains a minivan and isn’t particularly thrilling. What has garnered the Odyssey its appeal, is its ability to maintain an exceptionally comfortable ride quality for long drives and family trips. The Odyssey offers supportive and comfortable seats, suitable for adults, in all three-rows. However, the third row is a bit lacking in leg room for adults. The suspension also does a good job of minimizing road imperfections and vibrations, lending to a quieter experience. While some wind noise is also transmitted into the cabin, it isn’t particularly intrusive or noisy. While the Odyssey doesn’t offer a lot of variety in its ride quality, the Odyssey Elite trim level’s 19-inch wheels give a firmer ride than the smaller available wheel options. However, there aren’t many bumps and dips that the Honda can’t handle with ease.
While the Honda has received a refresh to offer a more compelling argument in the class, the Odyssey continues to derive its power from the same 3.5-liter V6 engine as the outgoing model. The V6 is sufficiently powerful for the class, producing 280 horsepower and 262 pound-feet of torque. The V6 offers sufficient motivation for most drivers, remaining responsive enough to maintain driver engagement. The V6 is paired with a ten-speed automatic transmission that provides smooth and well-timed shifting. Additionally, the Odyssey offers paddle shifters as standard for manual shifting. The Odyssey is only offered with front-wheel-drive, with no option for all-wheel-drive available. The V6 offers good fuel economy, for a non-hybrid vehicle, earning an estimated fuel efficiency rating of 19 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway. However, the Odyssey loses some appeal to more fuel efficient hybrid rivals. The Odyssey offers surprisingly fun driving dynamics and performance, while retaining the comfort expected for the class, distinguishing itself in a class whose primary purpose is to haul passengers and cargo.
