The Honda HR-V shares its platform with the more exciting Honda Civic, providing a surprising amount of athleticism. However, the Honda is let down by its powertrain, which is both unremarkable and the sole option offered. The HR-V distinguishes itself in the class as a practical and satisfying subcompact SUV delivering a high degree of utility. For 2025, Honda has carried over the HR-V lineup from the previous year. However, the Honda received a redesign in 2023 and doesn’t have many notable flaws besides its unremarkable powertrain.
The Honda HR-V offers an attractive exterior design that is unique in the incredibly saturated subcompact SUV class. The HR-V provides a good degree of curb appeal, utilizing attractive body lines and an aggressively sculpted front end design. While the exterior design leans toward the sporty side, the HR-V’s interior offers a more modern and minimalistic approach. The HR-V directs most controls through the touch-screen infotainment system and the steering wheel, providing a thin center console that is attractive and functional. The cabin of the HR-V is also well-built, with sturdy panels and solid build quality. While the base LX trim level is sparsely equipped with features, upgrading to the higher trims offer additional features without a substantial increase in price.
The most remarkable aspect of the HR-V is its balance of ride quality and athleticism. This should come as no surprise, given that its platform also underpins one of the most engaging compact cars currently available, the Honda Civic. While the Honda HR-V doesn’t aim to excite drivers in the same way, it provides a generous amount of athleticism of the class. Additionally, the Honda does an excellent job of maintaining a comfortable ride, with a suspension that soaks up most road imperfections. While the HR-V’s suspension doesn’t filter out the rougher bumps and dips, it does a good job of taking the edge off without becoming overly floaty. Additionally, the cabin’s sound deadening is remarkably effective, with noise remaining surprisingly low at highway speeds.
The HR-V is powered by a single engine option: a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 158 horsepower and 138 pound-feet of torque. The four-cylinder is paired with a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) that directs power to the front wheels as standard. However, an all-wheel-drive system is available on all trim levels for an additional $1,500. The four-cylinder, borrowed from the Civic, provides a noticeable improvement in performance over the previous generation, but lacks the power provided by other SUVs in the class. Additionally, most rivals reserve a more powerful powertrain for their higher trim levels. However, since the HR-V shares its platform with the Civic, the turbocharged 1.5-liter or the hybrid powertrain may join the lineup down the road.
The HR-V offers an estimated fuel economy of 26 mpg in the city and 32 mpg on the highway for front-wheel-drive models. Equipping all-wheel drive drops the fuel economy ratings to 25 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway.
