The Hyundai Sonata is an excellent option in the mid-size sedan class, offering attractive styling, balanced driving dynamics, and value-packed pricing. Additionally, while there are some tradeoffs, with some hard plastics and less upscale materials than some rivals, the Hyundai delivers solid value and well-rounded appeal. For 2025, following a mid-cycle refresh last year, Hyundai has opted to make some minor changes in trim levels and features. The Sonata SE trim level has rejoined the lineup after a brief hiatus, offering a slightly more attractive starting price than the previous model year. Additionally, the convenience package previously available as an option on the SEL trim level has been shifted into a standalone trim live, dubbed “SEL Convenience”. Other minor changes in features include the addition of HVAC vents on the console of the N Line models for rear-seat passengers. Despite the minor updates, the Sonata remains a compelling option, providing excellent value for the class.
The Hyundai Sonata is one of the more attractive options in the class, providing sporty styling and an aggressively sculpted front-end design. The Sonata offers a prominent grille design, with a distinct and futuristic light bar across the front end. However, despite the exceptional sporty styling, the Sonata’s handling dynamics aren’t particularly exciting on most trim levels, instead boasting a smooth and more practical ride quality. The Sonata’s cabin is attractive and the quality is higher than the sticker price might suggest. The cabin is also exceptionally roomy, with a generous amount of rear passenger seating and leg space. Additionally, Hyundai provides comfortable seating, complemented by the comfortable ride quality. While cargo space isn’t remarkable, it is about average for the class and should be sufficient for most. The cabin is also well-insulated from outside noise, offering solid utility for long trips and daily driving. The interior design of the Sonata utilizes futuristic styling, but provides a more modern and ergonomic design. Additionally, the interior design that offers a good mix of touch-screen and physical controls, avoiding an overcomplicated infotainment system. The Sonata offers one of the most extensive suites of standard features in the class, providing several desirable features for safety, comfort, and driver assistance as standard. However, the Sonata with the most desirable features sits in the hybrid lineup.
The ride quality and handling dynamics of the Sonata offer some variety, with a performance focused N Line model that utilizes a more potent powertrain and capable suspension. Most trim levels of the Hyundai offer an agreeable ride quality, providing a good balance of comfort and athleticism. While even the base trim of the Sonata offers composed and responsive handling, some rivals, such as the Nissan Altima and Honda Accord, offer more athleticism and remain relatively comfortable. However, the Sonata maintains a good degree of composure and imbues confidence when cornering, coming out ahead on value. Additionally, for those seeking a more performance focused Sonata, the N Line variant that provides a sport-tuned suspension and more driver engagement. However, the N Line’s more performance-oriented setup comes at the cost of a slightly rougher ride and a markup in price. While the base powertrain is reasonably powerful and the suspension capable, those seeking a high degree of driver engagement may want to opt for the more expensive N Line or the few similarly priced rivals that prioritize it to a higher degree.
The Sonata comes with two gas-powered powertrain options, with a hybrid Sonata variant available. The base powertrain is a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 192 horsepower and 181 pound-feet of torque. The four-cylinder is paired with a conventional eight-speed automatic transmission, something that’s been replaced with CVT’s throughout the class, and front-wheel drive as standard. While all-wheel-drive is available as a $1,500 option, it is exclusive to the SEL trim level. While the base powertrain is reasonably powerful for city driving, highway maneuvers require some planning. However, the Sonata remains competitive in the sprint from 0-60 mph with most rivals, earning a time around 7.3-7.6 seconds in real world testing. While the base powertrain is unremarkable, it provides sufficient power for most driving maneuvers. The N Line is powered by a turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder that produces 290 horsepower and 311 pound-feet of torque. The turbo-four is paired with a smooth and quick-shifting 8-speed wet dual-clutch transmission and front wheel drive. The upgraded powertrain shaves a few seconds off the 0-60 mph time, earning a time around 5.3-5.4 seconds in real world testing. The N Line delivers solid performance for the class, providing quicker acceleration than the Nissan Altima VC-Turbo, but falling just shy of the Honda Civic Type R. However, the Sonata N Line offers a far more attractive price tag than the Civic Type R and trails by a few tenths to half a second. The Sonata distinguishes itself as an excellent option in the class, providing a solid range of trim levels to suite driver needs.
