The Hyundai Santa Fe is a good option in the mid-size SUV class, offering attractive styling, a modern and comfortable cabin, and good value. However, the Santa Fe loses some appeal with vague steering responses, unremarkable performance, and a cramped third-row. While a hybrid variant is available and provides a bit more power, it stands out as a slightly more fuel efficient alternative, delivering slower acceleration than the gas-powered models. Additionally, real world testing has shown ratings to be less remarkable than the EPA has estimated. For 2025, following an extensive redesign last year, Hyundai has opted to carryover the Santa Fe from the previous model year. However, the Santa Fe remains competent in its primary mission of providing a comfortable mid-size SUV with a high-level of curb appeal. Additionally, the Santa Fe distinguishes itself with a lower starting price than most rival, offering a good amount of value at a more attractive price.
The Santa Fe offers a significant improvement over the previous generation, offering muscular styling and a prominent front end design. Additionally, the Santa Fe offers a futuristic exterior design and boxy profile that’s sure to attract attention. The Santa Fe maintains boxy design elements throughout the cabin, offering a simplistic and upright dashboard layout. The Santa Fe is equipped with an attractive selection of physical and touch-screen controls, retaining more practical physical controls for audio and climate settings. Additionally, the Hyundai utilizes an attractive selection of materials, providing genuine leather upholstery as standard on higher trims. While the lower trim levels utilize a less upscale selection of materials, they are reasonably trimmed for the class. Additionally, the Santa Fe offers other minor upgrades throughout the cabin through trim upgrades, including a fully digital gauge cluster and a smaller touchscreen display for the climate control system. However, additional features are only available as trim upgrades, while some rivals additional features as packages or standalone options.
Despite the rugged exterior design of the Santa Fe, the Hyundai prioritizes comfort, offering a comfortable ride quality. The Santa Fe retains a good degree of athleticism for a three-row SUV, displaying moderate body roll when cornering and providing solid grip. While handling isn’t particularly athletic, a trait few rivals prioritize, the Hyundai also competes with the Mazda CX-90, which makes some sacrifices in comfort for driver engagement. The Hyundai offers a similar driving experience across the lineup, with trim upgrades serving as access to more luxurious accommodations. While an off-road oriented XRT trim is available, it faces stiff competition from the Ford Bronco, which provides exceptional off-road capabilities on even the base trim level. However, the Santa Fe doesn’t aim to excite, providing enough engagement to remain competent. The Hyundai distinguishes itself as one of the more comfortable options in the class, offering comfortable seating and a remarkably refined ride quality.
The Santa Fe is offered with a single powertrain, a turbocharged 2.5-liter inline-four-cylinder engine that produces 277 horsepower and 311 pound-feet of torque. The turbo-four is paired with an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission and front-wheel drive. While all-wheel drive is standard on the XRT trim level, it is available as a $1,800 option on all other trim levels. The base powertrain provides adequate motivation for most driving, delivering an estimated 0-60 mph time of 6.3 seconds. However, despite a slight improvement in power, it’s slightly slower than the previous generation. The Hyundai Santa Fe’s performance remains competitive for the class, offering similar acceleration to most rivals. While the Santa Fe offers competitive EPA fuel efficiency ratings, with front-wheel-drive models earning an estimated fuel efficiency as high as 20 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway, real world testing has shown less remarkable ratings, falling as short as 4 mpg of the estimated fuel efficiency. Additionally, while a hybrid variant is available with improved fuel efficiency ratings, real world testing shows a slightly. more significant drop in estimates than the gas-powered models.
