The Honda Civic is an excellent option in the compact sedan class, offering enjoyable handling dynamics, an upscale cabin, and enticing performance variants. The Honda Civic remains a solid value-option in the class, offering an attractive price tag given performance provided. For 2025, the Civic has received a mild exterior design refresh. However, the biggest update comes under the hood, with some changes in the powertrains offered. Honda has opted to discontinue the turbocharged 1.5-liter option, which provided a bit more motivation than the base four-cylinder. However, Honda has added a hybrid powertrain into the mix, that is exceptionally enticing. Honda has also trimmed the gas-powered Civic lineup, now reduced to the LX and Sport trim levels. The hybrid powertrain is now available as an option on the Sport trim level and as standard on the Sport Touring trim level. The Honda also receives a disappointing update, with the discontinuation of the optional manual transmission on the Civic hatchback. Unfortunately, the manual transmission is now only available on the sportier Civic Si and Type R models. The Honda Civic remains one of the best options in the class and remains as enticing as ever.
The Honda Civic receives a slight design refresh, but remains mostly the same as the last year model year. The new model offers some distinguishing details, such as revised headlamps and a reworked front bumper, but maintains all the appeal of last year’s model. The Honda Civic offers an sporty and attractive exterior design, with an aggressively styled front-end and attractive body lines. The sportier Civic Si and Type R models lean more towards the sportier side, utilizing distinct badging and making some adjustments in the exterior design. The interior of the Civic is incredibly upscale and offers a clean and streamlined design. The air vents are cleverly hidden by a honeycomb-patterned mesh design that runs across the dashboard. The cabin of the Civic also offers a minimalistic design that shifts most controls to the center infotainment system, with a few well-placed physical controls. Additionally, the build quality of the Civic is excellent with solid panels and tight gaps. The Honda Civic also utilizes some high-quality materials that are tastefully applied throughout the cabin. The Honda is also well-equipped with standard features for safety, comfort, and driver convenience.
The ride quality of the Honda Civic is exceptional, to say the least, with some variety among the sportier Civic Si and Type R models. The standard Civic offers a level of sophistication that is sparsely offered at this price point. The Civic feels lively and agile when turning and cornering, displaying minimal body lean thanks to its stiff suspension. A stiff suspension lends to a decline in ride quality in most cars, but the Civic does a great job at filtering out bumps and dips in the road, producing a comfortable and composed ride. However, a noticeable amount of road noise is transmitted into the cabin at highway speeds. The steering is also crisp and well-weighted and the brakes are strong and slow the car to a stop with confidence. The sportier Honda Civic Si Sedan ups the fun slightly, utilizing a more potent gas-powered four-cylinder to provide faster acceleration. However, with the Civic’s new hybrid powertrain, it stands out for its handling improvements. The Civic Si is a bit more oriented towards athleticism than comfort, offering larger brake rotors and a firmer suspension. The Civic Si remains exceptionally quick at the price point, but reduces comfort for athleticism in comparison to the Civic Hybrid. The Civic Type R hatchback is most powerful performance model offered, offering a significant improvement in athleticism and performance. While the Civic Type R also makes some sacrifices in comfort, it is more oriented towards performance than the Civic Si and targets a more performance-focused niche in the class.
The Honda Civic is offered with four powertrains, each distinguished with a specific model. The standard gas-powered powertrain is a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 158 horsepower and 138 pound-feet of torque. The base powertrain offers good performance, offering enough power to make good use of its capable handling. However, a 0-60 mph time of 8.9 seconds does little to excite. The next powertrain up is the new hybrid system that pairs the 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with two electric motors to produce a combined 200 horsepower and 232 pound-feet of torque. The Civic Hybrid is surprisingly quick, sprinting from 0-60 mph in just 6.2 seconds. The Hybrid also offers significant improvements in fuel efficiency ratings, decreasing some appeal for the base powertrain. The next powertrain up is a 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that produces 200 horsepower and 192 pound-feet of torque and is found in the Civic Si sedan. The Civic Si offers a solid improvement over the base powertrain but falls short of the new hybrid models, with a 0-60 mph time of 6.4 seconds. The most powerful engine is reserved for the Civic Type R hatchback, utilizing a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 315 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque. The Type R is the quickest option in the lineup, with a 0-60 mph of 4.9 seconds. While the Type R hatchback doesn’t offer as significant of an improvement over the hybrid and turbocharged four-cylinder, considering the near $50,000 price tag, it is not just the most athletic Civic offered, but one of most athletic options in the class. The Civic remains exclusively available with front-wheel-drive across the entire lineup.
