The Honda CR-V is an excellent option in the compact SUV class, providing competent handling, a smooth ride quality, and an exceptionally roomy cabin. However, the CR-V is held back by unremarkable powertrains, with some rivals offering more powerful options. While the CR-V loses some appeal to the likes of the Mazda CX-50, it maintains a solid position against the base powertrains of its rivals. Additionally, rivals such as the Mazda reserve their more powerful powertrains for the higher trim levels, most of which start significantly higher than the Honda. For 2025, the Honda CR-V has been carried over largely unchanged. While a new hydrogen powered variant has been added to the lineup elsewhere, it is reserved for sale in California, where fuel demands can be met. However, with the redesign of the CR-V in 2023, there isn’t much to improve. The 2025 Honda CR-V remains an excellent option in the class.
While the Honda CR-V isn’t the most attractive option in the class, it offers a good degree of curb appeal with a prominent and sporty front end design. While the CR-V offers a more traditionally rectangular profile, Honda has made some solid adjustments to avoid diminishing curb appeal. The CR-V offers a roomy interior with a generous amount of passenger space in both rows. The CR-V’s interior design is highlighted by a honeycomb-design insert that runs across the dash and discreetly hides the air vents. The build quality of the CR-V is also excellent and highlights the high-quality upholstery and soft-touch plastics that are standard. The interior is far from innovative but is upscale and offers a clean design through well placed physical controls. Additionally, the CR-V comes well-equipped with standard features, providing several desirable safety features as standard.
The CR-V offers an enticing blend of comfort and athleticism, delivering enough driver engagement to remain enjoyable. However, the CR-V makes comfort a notable priority, with a suspension that is expertly tuned to do so. The suspension of the CR-V absorbs most road imperfections with ease, delivering a comfortable experience. The SUV also maintains balance and composure on the road, which is aided by precise steering. The steering is light and accurate making it relatively easy to drive, but lacks the engagement that some rivals offer. However, the CR-V doesn’t make any notable efforts towards performance and distinguishes itself for its practicality. Rivals such as the Mazda CX-50 and Volkswagen Tiguan offer more driver engagement, sacrificing practicality and comfort for more inspiring driving dynamics.
The CR-V utilizes a single powertrain to motivate the compact SUV, delivering adequate performance. Every CR-V is powered by a turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 190 horsepower and 179 pound-feet of torque. The CR-V pairs the turbo-four with a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) to direct power to the front wheels as standard. However, an all-wheel-drive system is available on all trim levels for an additional $1,500. Additionally, the available all-wheel-drive system offers slightly better handling dynamics. The CVT is also reasonably refined, remaining composed and offering responsive acceleration. The turbo-four is reasonably powerful for most driving maneuvers, offering a 0-60 mph time of 8.1 seconds. While the CR-V isn’t remarkably quick, it beats the Toyota RAV4 and manages to match the base powertrain of the Mazda CX-5. While the CR-V is also offered with a hybrid variant, it does little in terms of performance, standing out as a more fuel-efficient alternative with a bit more power.
The CR-V is reasonably fuel-efficient, earning an EPA estimated fuel efficiency rating of 28 mpg in the city and 34 mpg on the highway on front-wheel-drive models. Opting for all-wheel-drive makes some notable sacrifices in ratings, dropping them down to 26 mpg in the city and 31 mpg on the highway.
