The Hyundai Elantra is a solid option in the compact sedan class, offering attractive styling, a roomy cabin, and a generous selection of standard features. However, the Elantra loses some appeal with unremarkable performance from the base engine, a lack of driver engagement on most trim levels, and some low quality cabin materials. While the Elantra offers more notable performance through the N Line and N performance models, both come with a significant increase in price and utilize trim specific powertrains. Additionally, while the Hyundai makes some notable improvements in materials selections with trim upgrades, even the most expensive Elantra suffers from an overabundance of hard plastics. The Elantra is also available with a hybrid powertrain that offers an improvement in EPA estimated fuel efficiency ratings. However, the Elantra Hybrid falls significantly short of ratings in real world testing and produces less power than the base gas-powered Elantra. For 2025, Hyundai has opted to carryover the Elantra from the previous model year with a few minor changes in trim levels. Hyundai has replaced the SEL trim level with the SEL Sport, offering a bit more sporty flair at a more attractive price. Additionally, Hyundai has replaced the convenience package on the outgoing SEL trim with a new SEL Convenience trim level. While the updates are far and few, the Elantra received a facelift for the previous model year and minimal changes were to be expected. The Elantra is a solid option in the class for a value-oriented compact sedan that provides attractive styling and an equally attractive selection of features. However, the Elantra falls short of its sporty styling on all but two trim levels.
The Elantra offers an aggressive sports car-esque design, with an aggressively shaped grille and sporty body lines. The Elantra offers a good amount of curb appeal with a fastback roofline that lends to a sporty profile. The cabin of the Elantra is spacious and has an upscale design, with a good amount of soft-touch surfaces throughout the interior. While hard plastics are notably prominent and lend to a cheaper feeling interior, it should come as no surprise given the price point. The Elantra’s cabin is competitive for the class, offering comfortable seating and solid build quality, but some rivals offer a more attractive cabin with better material selections. However, rivals make their own tradeoffs to remain competitive at this price point. Every Elantra comes well-equipped at the price point, providing several desirable safety and driver convenience features as standard on even the base trim level. Additionally, Hyundai does a good job of providing a variety of trim levels, offering various levels of features at each price point. While the Limited trim level offers the most extensive suite of features, the lower trim levels are reasonably equipped with desirable features, such as heated seats.
The Hyundai Elantra offers well-balanced driving dynamics, with a solid combination of comfort and performance-oriented design choices. The Elantra offers an enjoyable driving experience, with its suspension smoothing out most road imperfections. The Elantra is also relatively athletic, with well-weighted and responsive steering, providing impressive cornering capabilities. However, the base powertrain lacks the motivation to push the compact sedan and the isn’t paired with a particularly capable suspension. The Elantra is also offered in a sportier N Line trim that provides a more powerful engine and additional performance equipment. The N Line models offer a notable improvement in power and utilize a sport-tuned suspension to deliver more engaging handling dynamics. While the N Line models offer performance that is better suited for the sporty exterior design, the Elantra N stands for its remarkably athletic driving demeanor for an exceptionally low cost, when compared to rivals. However, the Elantra is by no means boring, as all trims offer a good degree of driver engagement and cornering capabilities for the class.
The Elantra is offered with three gas-powered powertrains, with a hybrid variant available for improved fuel efficiency. The base powertrain is a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 147 horsepower and 132 pound-feet of torque. The four-cylinder is paired with a CVT and front-wheel-drive as the sole arrangement. Opting for the more performance focused N Line models offers a 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that produces 201 horsepower and 195 pound-feet of torque. The N Line’s turbocharged engine raises the fun factor with more power and quicker acceleration. Additionally, the N Line models are paired with dual-clutch automatic transmission that delivers a significant improvement in performance with quicker and smoother shifting. While the upgraded powertrain delivers an improvement in performance, the N Line is still somewhat reserved, striking a middle ground between performance-focused and comfortable. The Elantra N pushes the envelope the most and offers the most potent engine option, a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 276 horsepower and 289 pound-feet of torque. The Elantra N also pairs the turbo-four with a six-speed manual transmission. Additionally, the Elantra N is offered with a dual-clutch automatic transmission, for an additional $1,500, that delivers smooth and quick shifts.
