The Hyundai Kona is a good option in the subcompact SUV class, providing futuristic styling, a solid list of standard features, and excellent utility. However, the Hyundai’s driving experience isn’t quite up to par with most rivals, lacking refinement and engagement. While the Hyundai is available with N Line trim levels for sportier styling and additional features, the Kona doesn’t benefit much mechanically to improve driving dynamics. For 2025, Hyundai has opted to reshuffle the trim-levels with the addition of a new N Line S trim, that’s slotted below the N Line for slightly lower. While the N Line S offers a more attractive entry price for the more powerful turbo-four, it loses out on the premium audio system and power moonroof, among other features. Hyundai has also made the SEL trim-level with the convenience package a standalone trim. The new SEL Convenience trim-level remains essentially the same as the option it replaces. The Hyundai Kona is a good option in the class, providing good value, an attractive list on standard features, and solid curb appeal.
The exterior design of the Hyundai Kona offers a high degree of curb appeal for the class, with futuristic styling and a sleek profile. While the Kona isn’t particularly athletic or quick, its exterior styling is muscular with sporty body lines. Despite the attractive exterior, the Kona’s cabin remains more remarkable, providing a surprisingly spacious interior layout and an incredibly attractive dashboard. However, the Kona isn’t without flaws, as it suffers from numerous hard plastics on lower trim levels. While the higher trim levels give way to nicer materials, some rivals offer a more premium cabin at a similar price. However, the dashboard of the Kona offers massive appeal, with dual 12.3-inch displays behind one continuous piece of glass. Additionally, the Kona retains a solid selection of physical control, most of which are oriented towards the driver. The cabin of the Kona is surprisingly spacious, with a good amount of seating space in the front row. While the rear seats are reasonably spacious, leg room is a bit limited compared to rivals. However, the Kona remains of the most attractive options in the class in regard to styling.
The Kona misses the mark on driving dynamics, falling short of most rivals. The Kona’s suspension is tuned surprisingly soft, given the sporty appearance, and reduces athleticism and composure. While the Kona is reasonably comfortable on smooth roads, the cabin is noticeably jostled by rougher stretches of road. Additionally, the Kona’s displays noticeable body rolls during more athletic maneuvering, delivering lackluster handling dynamics and very little in terms of driver engagement. Additionally, while the N Line trim levels benefit from sportier styling and larger wheels, the suspension remains the same. While the improvements in its appearance are enticing, the larger wheels reduce the ride quality further. However, the Kona distinguishes itself as a stylish daily commuter, delivering enough refinement to remain adequate for most driving maneuvers. The Kona offers a much more appealing driving demeanor in city traffic, with responsive and accurate steering.
The Hyundai Kona is offered with two powertrains, the more powerful of which is better suited for the subcompact SUV. The base powertrain is available on the SE, SEL, and SEL Convenience trim-levels, utilizing a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine to produce 147 horsepower and 132 pound-feet of torque. The four-cylinder is paired with a CVT that directs power to either the front- or all-wheel drivetrain. The base four-cylinder offers unremarkable acceleration, taking over 9 seconds to get from 0-60 mph. The upgraded powertrain is available as standard on the N Line S, N Line, and Limited trim levels, providing a more reasonable amount of motivation. The upgraded powertrain utilizes a 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine to produce a more muscular 190 horsepower and 195 pound-feet of torque. The turbo-four is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and either front- or all-wheel drive. The turbocharged four-cylinder provides some much-needed power and improves the 0-60 mph time to 7.5 seconds. Both powertrains offer good fuel-efficiency ratings for the class, with ratings as high as 29/34 mpg (city/highway) when equipped with the base powertrain and front-wheel drive. While the upgraded powertrain and all-wheel drive reduce ratings in their own right, the least efficient Kona earns a rating of 24/29 mpg (city/highway).

Zero down payment doesn’t mean $0 due at signing. A down payment simply refers to the amount paid upfront to reduce the amount financed over the course of a lease. Even with a $0 down payment lease, there are still sales taxes fees and Bank/DMV fees to pay before you can drive off in your new car. These fee’s often range anywhere from $2,000 to $5,000 depending on the vehicles. Please refer to our FAQ’s Page for more information or give us a call at 631-204-3329
