The Hyundai Tucson is a good option in the compact SUV class, providing attractive styling, a smooth ride quality, and solid value. However, the Tucson loses some appeal with a lack of driver engagement, sluggish acceleration, and real world fuel efficiency that falls short of the expectations set. Additionally, while the Tucson hybrid makes some improvement in performance and fuel efficiency, it only shaves a few tenths of a second off the 0-60 mph time and delivers similarly disappointing real world fuel efficiency. However, very few rivals distinguish themselves as “quick”, with the most notable option being the Ford Bronco Sport and its upgraded powertrain. Additionally, while the Ford out-sprints the Hyundai, the upgraded powertrain is reserved for the highest trim level and comes with a steep increase in price. The Hyundai maintains a good position in the class by distinguishing itself as a value option, providing a generous amount of features at each point. For 2025, Hyundai has given the Tucson a styling refresh, updating the front end and wheel designs. The interior also receives a notable update, replacing the old infotainment with Hyundai’s dual display setup and merging the digital gauge cluster display with the infotainment display. However, the digital gauge cluster is reserved for the higher trim levels, with the lower trim levels utilizing analog gauges. Additional minor updates include slight tweak to the steering wheel design and the climate control panel, updated standard and available features, and a new Baby Mode added to the My Drive system. Overall, the Tucson increases some appeal for the 2025 model year with some meaningful updates. The Hyundai Tucson remains a good option in the class, offering an attractive, comfortable, and practical package at a great price.
The Hyundai Tucson’s exterior design remains attractive, with prominent body lines that lend to a sportier design than the handling dynamics might suggest. The updated front end design makes an improvement over the previous model year, offering a more muscular and rugged design. The Hyundai Tucson offers one of the nicest cabins in the class, with higher trims nearing luxury quality. The cabin of the Tucson offers a simplistic interior design, providing an ergonomic dashboard that is attractive and easy to use. Additionally, the Tucson also makes a notable improvement in ease of use by reintroducing physical controls for the audio and climate systems, something the previous model year directed through the infotainment system. The interior of the Tucson offers a tasteful mix of low- and high-quality materials on the lower trims, with higher trims offering an abundance of soft-touch surfaces and premium materials. Additionally, the Tucson offers solid build quality with sturdy panels and tight gaps. Every Tucson comes equipped with a solid list of standard features, with more desirable features reserved for the higher trims. The Hyundai Tucson is also one of the few options in the class to provide trims with luxury-level features.
The Tucson strikes a good balance between a comfortable ride quality and engaging handling dynamics, maintaining enough athleticism to remain agreeable. However, the Tucson’s is oriented towards comfort, primarily focusing on delivering a quiet and comfortable experience. While some rivals, such as the Mazda CX-5, make more notable strides in athleticism, the Hyundai is far from unrefined. Additionally, the Hyundai lacks the potent powertrains that would be better associated with that degree of athleticism. The Tucson delivers a remarkably comfortable ride quality, offering luxury-level quality. The cabin of the Tucson provides plush and supportive cushions, utilizing attractive materials and providing a good degree of support. Additionally, the cabin of the Tucson offers an excellent level of noise deadening, minimizing road and wind noise to a high degree. While the Tucson isn’t particularly athletic, it maintains a good degree of composure around corners and is aided by direct steering responses. Additionally, its handling is confident and well suited for the powertrains offered.
The Tucson offers a single gas-powered powertrain, with two powertrains reserved for the hybrid models. All gas-powered Tucson models are motivated by the same 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 187 horsepower and 178 pound-feet of torque. The four-cylinder is paired with a reasonably refined eight-speed automatic transmission and either front- or all-wheel-drive. However, all-wheel-drive costs an additional $1,500 and slightly reduces fuel efficiency rating. The four-cylinder provides the SUV with a reasonable amount of motivation for most driving but can feel especially underwhelming when pushed. Even with all-wheel-drive, the Tucson offers an estimated 0-60 mph time of 8.8 seconds. Additionally, the eight-speed automatic is smooth to upshift in more mundane driving situations but can feel unrefined under harder acceleration. The Tucson offers good EPA estimated fuel efficiency ratings, with front-wheel-drive models offering an estimated 25 mpg in the city and 32 mpg on the highway. However, the Tucson underperforms ratings in real world testing, offering a fuel efficiency as low as 26 mpg on the highway. While the Tucson Hybrid offers an improvement in performance, the additional power only makes minor strides in performance and has similar issues with fuel efficiency in real world testing. Additionally, the updated hybrid powertrains are yet to be tested but improvements are expected to minor. However, the Tucson Hybrid offers some appeal with attractive price, starting nearly $5,000 higher than the front-wheel-drive base Tucson and offering all-wheel drive as standard.
